Pathos, arcana, calamity…
and the infinite loneliness of power.
Are you willing to sacrifice everything in the altar of ambition?
The Magus is a solo journaling RPG about the sweeping journey of a wizard ready to sacrifice all. In this game, you use dice and pen to generate prompts that inform what happens in the story. A
You will navigate strange encounters and confront complex opportunities for learning spells—or cultivating tenuous bonds. Fueled by ambition and purpose, your Magus embarks on a journey for ultimate power. But sacrifices must be made. Must you relentlessly pursue your goals, or do you cling on to those that you love?
Unlike multiplayer campaigns, you set the pace and drive the story through introspection and writing; using the power of rolls and prompts that spur your control of your wizard’s destiny. And unlike many solo journaling games, the Magus is crunchy — you will use all your dice to play and manage your character, for unparalleled structure to your narrative.
To be able to make a system and procedures that are an actual game of choices, but entwined with the player’s creativity and story desires like this is exceptional game design. It’s one of the best solo games I’ve ever played.
An absolutely magical solo game. I simply love it.
The Magus casts serious design magic. In addition to being a phenomenal solo rpg that makes you feel like a ruminating mage, it’s also a feat in visual and graphic design. Momatoes has taken ethereal, moody artwork and made it crackle on the page.
If you’re looking for a reason to write and want it to linger ages after, I can’t recommend this game enough
Wow, just wow. Never had such a smooth solo experience, while keeping a lot of narrative freedom and replayability.
I have a hard time getting into solo RPGs but there was something evocative about this one in its superb design and interesting mechanics that clicked for me. I enjoyed the element of risk in this one that fit perfectly with the theme of wild magic. Very fun rolling for different spells and imagining what they did.
Befriended a talking frog with depression then let it die in a fireball of my own making. 10/10 would irresponsibly cast “Blast Fireball” again.
The second edition is powered by the Oracle, a 78-card deck which holds the Spell and Bond prompts, plus artwork that can inspire your writing. A digital version plus an online playable version of the Oracle will be available.
The second edition also comes with brand-new prompts for a fantasy urban setting, plus rules for duet play and incorporating the Oracle with momatoes games. Look forward to the release on April 2025.
